Overnight on the Ocmulgee

  • Towaliga River Retreat 5539-5541 Juliette Road Juliette, GA, 31046 United States (map)

Hurricane Helene damaged the South River Water Trail making it unfeasible for us to offer group paddles this year. So we’re headed downstream to explore the Ocmulgee!

Camp Friday, Paddle Saturday: Meet us Friday afternoon/evening to set up camp under a wanning gibbous moon at the charming Towaliga River Retreat campground on the Ocmulgee River! We’ll put-in Saturday morning at 9am right there at the campground for a 10-mile guided paddle to Popes Ferry Landing. After shuttling back to camp, we invite everyone to an early supper (optional, self-pay) at the one-and-only Whistle Stop Cafe – walking distance from camp. The cafe closes at 4pm, so feasibility will depend on timing.

The 5-6 hour paddle will depart directly from the campground and conclude at Popes Ferry Landing. Shuttle back to camp (with your gear) is provided, and optional gear provided (choose in dropdown). This paddle is Class I with some Class II shoals at the end. Children 13+ with paddling experience are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Requirements: This is an overnight event. Participants are required to stay Friday night and be ready to paddle at 9am Saturday. Camps must be broken down and stored in cars before the paddle.

Cancellation: SRWA will be monitoring the weather. If significant rain is anticipated or occurs before the event, SRWA will sent a cancellation email within 24 hrs and issue refunds. If you need to cancel, please do so within 48 hours of the event. Last minute cancellations, call: 404-285-3756 or 706-254-9526.

The train schedule is unavailable to the public, but cars can run several times per night. It’s part of the experience, so please be aware and come prepared with earplugs and a (caffeinated) morning beverage!
